About the Palais
History
The Palais was built in 1922, it has at various times housed a tea room, bathing house and a dance hall.
On the opening day of the Palais, two thirds of the general public of Adelaide attended. For the next 45 years it was a landmark destination for Adelaidians and country South Australians alike. During this time the Palais main attraction was its Ballroom featuring big bands and functions. In the late 1950's many local bands played at dances on Saturday nights including the locally famous "Penny Rocketts"
In the late 1960's the Semaphore Surf lifesaving club occupied the building.
From 1981 until 1996 the Palais fell into disrepair including a fire in 1994 which gutted the once majestic icon. Restoration began in 1996 and took 18 months to complete. Today the Palais has been restored back to its former glory and is once again a spectacular tourist destination as well as being an integral part of the local entertainment and hospitality scene.
The building has now been listed by the National heritage trust of South Australia. Part of the Palais uniqueness is that it's the only building of its size and style on the beachfront of South Australia. Part of its charm is that depending on the occasion you will find people dressed in clothing ranging from Bathers (Swimmers) to Bowties.
The Palais is open 7 days a week for Lunch and Dinner. On Saturdays, Sundays and Public Holidays we also serve Breakfast in the Bistro.
